Sarasota Yacht Club supports new tech station for Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County teens

SYC members present a $15,322 check to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County on May 16.

Sarasota Yacht Club (SYC) hosted the inaugural SYC Cares Caring & Sharing event on Saturday, April 28, where a portion of the proceeds benefitted the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County. The event welcomed more than 150 SYC members and featured a cocktail hour, a Silent Auction and Port Wine Raffle Station and a Live Auction.

“The Sarasota Yacht Club was proud to select Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County as our first partner through our newly-established SYC Cares initiative,” said Jane Hutchins, SYC Commodore. “SYC Cares was formed with the objective of positioning our Club as a positive community citizen, which will allow the Club to complete ‘projects of impact’ and give back to the community we all love! We believe that the Boys & Girls Clubs also inspire its young members to have that same level of commitment to their community through its quality educational programs.”

SYC’s generosity will support the new Technology Station and Wall Mural at The Club.

On Wednesday, May 16, SYC members presented a $15,322 check from the event to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County at the organization’s monthly Opening Doors to Great Futures Dinner. The funds will support the Technology Station and Wall Mural in the agency’s new, state-of-the-art space for teens, called The Club, which is located within the Lee Wetherington Boys & Girls Club at 3100 Fruitville Road in Sarasota.

In addition to the Technology Station and Wall Mural, The Club’s 3,300 sq. ft. space also features a smoothie and coffee cafe, a built-in performance stage with lighting and an audio/video system, TVs with gaming stations, a recording studio and a learning lab where teens can participate in college and career prep programs, receive academic support or meet with mentors.

“SYC is helping our agency provide greater opportunities for teen Club members to achieve their full potential,” said Bill Sadlo, President/CEO at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County. “Because of their generous support, our teens have access to technology and other critical resources that will help them plan for success after high school graduation.

SYC has been a great partner of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County for years; however, the partnership has grown tremendously over the past year. In March 2017, SYC’s culinary team guided a group of the organization’s Culinary Arts Program participants in preparing appetizers and a three-course meal for 50 guests at the agency’s monthly Opening Doors to Great Futures Dinner. SYC has also hosted multiple tours and job-shadow days for Club teens to explore diverse career pathways in the hospitality industry. Additional plans are currently underway to expand partnership opportunities between SYC and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County.
